How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki is composed of two Japanese words- Rei and Ki.

Rei can be defined as the Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the universe. Ki is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. Ki is flowing in everything that is alive including plants, animals and humans. We receive Ki from the air we breathe, from food, sunshine, and from deep sleep.

Ki is also a the Chi of China, the prana of India the Qi of Qigong and the Mana of Hawaiians.

The Benefits and Uses of Reiki

One of the greatest benefits of Reiki is the possibility of self-treatment. It is also an extremely effective technique for total relaxation and stress release. It amplifies the life force energy in our bodies, which then helps create balance in the physical and subtle or finer bodies, helping to release withheld emotions and energy blocks.

Anyone can benefit from receiving Reiki by learning to differentiate between doing and being mode: the doing involves judgement, self-criticism, identification with feelings, circling thoughts, thinking about the past, speculating, reacting and focusing on the result. Versus the being mode of responsiveness, attention, living in the moment, non – judgment, acceptance, connection with the senses and open heartedness.

Reiki Sessions

Reiki sessions may vary length wise and I’ll usually combine my Reiki treatment with other modalities, such as Tibetan singing bowls or Touch For Health Synthesis. The average session is an hour long and is done privately in a calm, secure, safe area.

I encourage my clients to schedule some quiet time before and after their Reiki session, allowing themselves to fully receive its benefits.

  • Arriving and leaving with calmness and focus will strengthen the power of the session
  • do things that they love before and/or after a session such as spending time in nature, having a hot bath, listening to music or just have a little quiet time.
  • drink lots of water as we work with emotions and keeping hydrated helps the body flow with it

As with most modalities Reiki works best when supplemented with more than one session and is often more effective when used in conjunction with other healing. A course of at least 4 sessions have the optimal effect but I have had very positive feedback after a single appointment as well.
